Description

A glass plate negative, possibly collodion, of a fire-fighting scene with horse drawn firefighting apparatus. The scene shows a wagon with wooden spoked wheels with metal banding, six hose connections with four hoses attached, side bars for supporting firefighters and hoses, and set of stanchions with valves and wheels that extend upward to a set of two nozzles spraying water on a smoky scene. Three firefighters are pictured manning the wagon. One is at the base of a long extension ladder that extends upward past a balconied window. The other two man are at the nozzles. All wear high collar coats, rubber boots and firefighters helmets with peaked tops and canted brims. The scene is taken from a low angle. The plate is "coffee and cream" colored, which may indicate it is coated with collodion.
