Seated elderly woman who wear a dress of silk taffeta - possibly her "good black dress." Straight waist, slightly below natural waist. Tailored darts above waistline, most likely boned underneath. CF button closure, high round neckline. Detachable small white collar present with what looks like a brooch in the middle. Black buttons up CF. Small shoulder sleeve caps peeking out from under shawl, trimmed with two small strips of black velvet with box pleated edging. Skirt is attached to waist by knife pleats facing CF. Large black lace shawl over shoulders. She also wears black net mitts. Hair is center parted with headdress close to sides of head, appearing to be made of pleated net or gauze(?). Dress was definitely made in 1850s, but had since been adapted to the styling of the 1860s.Collection
