Description

Hay knife with a wooden handle at the top and cast iron handle near the bottom. Wide cast iron double prongs at the bottom that form an upside down "V" shape.

Context

Hay knives were used to cut hay after it had been gathered and stacked in the barn and had become compacted. The smaller pieces of hay could then be used to feed livestock. The shape of this one also allowed for the cutting of thistles.
