Entirely hand stitched petticoat of black silk, apparently from a recycled dress; the lower half is quilted with a crescent design. Cotton batting throughout, golden yellow silk lining. Pleated so the front is flat and the pleats face away to meet in the back at a slit opening. 3” extensions on either end of heavy white cotton waistband, no fasteners. Strips of the same cotton folded into 3 layers, simply stitched to form straps secured at the front and not at the back. The top of the skirt is folded over to the inside, with the folded waistband encasing it. The hem was turned up an inch or so with 2 rows of top stitching; probably later it received the once-black wool braid binding.Collection
