"Machine knit silk stockings, pale ?pink with deep cuff banded with soft red at the top and dark red at the bottom; one has holes that look like a pair of triangles, not 4s. Reinforced toes and heels; the toes are a round straight shape and the heels have the seam under the heel. Long openwork clocks from toe to calf, bordered with simple embroidered stylized flowers. Initials J.R.W. are worked in tiny red cross stitch on the cuff.8” foot, 22.5” leg."
Accompanying note, inked: “Stockings very old. J R Wood.” Reverse: “1620 Locust St.” Presumably accompanied shoes #2008.052.1 with a matching dress sold just before these items were put out for sale. The lady who bought it is a dealer named Marie Niforos. She wishes she had known about them and we wish we had known about the dress! Unfortunately, the dress has many ugly stains on it despite being in otherwise perfect condition. It is simple, typical of its kind, very well made: long gigot sleeves, wide neckline, round waist. These came from the Foulke estate in Philadelphia. (apparently a major Quaker family)Collection
