G2007.078Description
Entirely machine-stitched tea gown made of brown plaid silk that is speculated to be recycled from an 1860s dress. Princess seams at the bust to the hip. The skirt fits fairly close to the body with a large double box pleat from neck to hem, tacked down at the waist, and from there, it becomes a triple box pleat. Front opens to hip, conical black glass buttons; pocket in proper right side. Standing collar. Long, shaped sleeves that look narrow but this is for a small woman so they probably did not fit tightly. Long shoulder seam. Two side back seams extend from the armscye, but none from the shoulder seam. Brown silk grosgrain ribbon used for loose tie at waist, also as bow decoration at top and bottom of sleeve. Lined entirely with brown glazed cotton, the inside hem finished with a narrow band of heavy brown velveteen. No bones. Although the box pleat does not fan out or form draperies, it seems meant for a wide bustle. Seems designed to fit as a maternity dress.Collection
