G2006.143Description
Entirely hand stitched cloak made of a large circle (pieced) of blue resist printed cotton lined with plain weave white cotton, about calf length. Interlined with wool flannel (?); the hem and front edges are finished by turning both fabrics to the inside at the edge. Second elbow-length cape, unlined, gathered into a yoke concealed by the collar, edged with a piped band of self fabric and 2” self flounce made from selvage to avoid the need of a hem; curves up to CF neck. The wide, rounded collar spreads a bit across the shoulder; interfaced and rudimentarily pad stitched to give a nice rise around the neck; piped and edged with 1” self flounce also made from lengths of selvage for the finished edge. Strips of self fabric attached to front edges at waist level, as straps for grasping. Inside the neck, about 3” in from the opening is a securely stitched 3/8” strap or tie made of brown checked cotton on the bias; its mate is missing; seems to be a later adjustment for tighter (awkward) fit around neck. There were others of self fabric, apparently, at the corners of the opening. Thread remains for a button (?) on one side. No evidence that the binding on the shorter cape was used as a casing for a drawstring to allow the cape to be drawn up as a hood.Collection
