G93.047Description
"Skirt, entirely hand stitched heavy PW natural nankeen? cotton. The yarns of the cloth are of lighter and darker tints- suggesting the natural variations of natural brown cotton fiber. Composed of four straight panels, 26” selvage to selvage, 37” long, pieced from knee down with 2 gores each to flare wider on each side (using cloth apparently cut from the bottom after the deep tuck above the hem was released). Hem neatly overcast, about 1.3” deep. Gathered tightly and evenly into 1” self waistband, 30” long. Angular pocket flap or welt in each side seam, with 1 pocket bag of dark brown lining cambric (about 24” long) placed on proper left in a position correct for wearing with waistband under the bust. The bag seam edge is whipped with heavy linen cord. 1 brass eye on WB. Added later (?): crudely, long ties made of strips of cylinder printed fabric. Fairly full. Worn with short gown? No evidence of shoulder straps but the waistband could be a replacement although that seems unlikely in this case. Very nicely made."Collection
