Description

Woman's dress of white cotton muslin with weft patterning in alternating plain and broken stripes, lined in back with unpatterned muslin. Rounded neckline, slightly flattened in front where there is an added, slightly pleated panel in bodice. No evidence of fastenings on back closure remain. Side back seams are piped. Skirt is pleated to bodice in back. Warp patterning becomes denser and more complex toward hem, in a broad register of floral and foliate motifs above a horizontal stripe. Bottom edge of dress is finished with a long muslin ruffle. Short, full oversleeves edged with muslin ruffle (partially reconstructed); there is a very small eyelet in each sleeve near armscye, slightly toward back of shoulder, likely to allow for a ribbon or tape of draw up oversleeve. Some vestiges of undersleeves remain in armscye. Hand sewn.
