Description

Soft red kid leather shoes, hand stitched. Straights with a slip heel; softly rounded toe; dagged edge on throat of fairly high vamp; two oval cutouts over toes; all edges bound with pink silk ribbon. Lined with coarse linen, also used on inner sole. Side and back seams. Little semicircle of white kid to cushion the inner edge of the opening at the heel. Inside each side near the top edge is a pair of thread 1/2” ‘straps’ to receive ribbons for lacing. No marks. Typewritten note on one side of small piece of paper: Miss Quimby Winchester; on the reverse in pencil: “Worn at Grandma Quimby’s Wedding [red pencil] Dec. 1815.”
