Pair of Berlin work (upright Gobelin stitch) slipper tops (man sized?) worked in Berlin wools on coarse gray canvas with paired threads but lacking counted-thread stripes. High vamp, square toes. Allover pattern of identical berry pairs with shaded green leaves, and berries in shaded purple, red or orange on a black ground. Both were seamed in the back by machine, with a reinforcing strip of sturdy cotton. One was subsequently unpicked. Never mounted on soles. Found stitched with doubled black cotton thread onto a large scrap of white tagboard with a ball-point pen inscription: “Needlepoint for a man’s bed-room slippers never completed. Worked about 1850. ‘Gobelin stitch-upright’Collection
