Scope and Content

The Samuel B. Allen House is a Pivotal Structure located at 25 Fountain Avenue West. The house was built for Samuel Badger Allen, whose father Marston was a signer of the Village's Articles of Incorporation. Architects were Walter and Wilson. The site was the original location of the Heffner Tavern. The house is built of Ashlar and blue limestone with the addition of a butlers pantry and 2 bathrooms around 1900. In 1992, a tunnel which led to the house known as the "Pillars" at 780 Congress was filled in. There is an underground room on the corner of Congress and West Fountain on this property. The existence on this tunnel and room suggest a probable association with the underground railroad. Source: Home Owners Survey, 2005
