Scope and Content

George Crawford House, a Pivotal Structure, is located at 825 Greenville Avenue. This house was constructed by George Crawford for H.W. Hughes about 1854. A columned front porch now replaces the veranda that once ran along most of the east side. The porch to the west is original as is the Italianate Bracket Frieze surrounding the roof. The archiecture of "Ashlea" is late Greek Revival and Early Italianate Exterior. The three large porches were added in the late 1870s. The classic front stoop, like the original, replaced the large full Veranda in the 1930s with columns from Historic Madison, Indiana. The legal easment protects the house from changes or additions inside and outside as a one family dwelling. The name "Ashlea" was given to the property for its very large ash trees and meadow in the front. The chandeleirs and piere glass wee removed in 1900 when vacant for over 10 years. Before being rescued by Mr. Daniel McLaren, who lived just to the south, the house was abandoned for a time and by 1905 became known as the Haunted House. Source: GHP Walking Tour Brochure
