The Harkness House is located at 965 Laurel Avenue.
Anthony Harkness, a member of the Glendale Association and second mayor of the village, purchased a large tract of land which extended from Laurel to Forest Avenue. His American Farmhouse style house, started in 1852, was first occupied in the spring of the following year.
A roof over the second floor porch was added for protection from the sun. Mr. Harkness allowed only one window per room. As he said, "There was not any use of more because the women just used them to put curtains over". His grandaughter had more windows added and the 2nd floor porch roof was removed later on.
Outbuildings include an original stone smoke house reputed to have been used to hide horses from Morgan's Raiders in 1863.Lexicon
