Scope and Content

The C.H. & D. Depot located at 44 Village Square is a Pivotal Structure. The building currently houses the Glendale Heritage Preservation Museum, Gift Shop and Archive Collections. Glendale was once the terminus of the commuter line of the Cincinnati Hamilton & Dayton Railroad. The first station built on this site c. 1859 was a white wooden gothic style building. This building was destroyed in the fire of 1880. It was replaced by the brick structure. In 2020 information was made known that contradicts this timeline. Please see attached document with information from the C.H. & D Railroad records. It turns out this is a very rare photo because it shows both sets of tracks. The Depot also served at times as the jail, a voting place and a meeting place for Village Council and the School Board. A wood turntable for reversing the train's direction was once located northeast of the structure. Passenger trains stopped running during World War II. Source: Comprehensive Survey Report.
