Scope and Content

A public school has occupied this site at 930 Congress Avenue since 1852. The one-story part of this building was built in 1852. The low middle section in 1865. A two story addition in 1875 completed the building making it flush with the corner of Erie and Congress. Source: Photo #1420 Renovations began under the tenure of E.F. Schweikart who became superintendent of schools in 1927. Additional renovations which added additional classrooms were done in 1928 from plans drawn by Stanley Matthews. Further renovations happened in 1935. The School originally housed grades 1-12 but later became an elementary school. The present building was constructed in 1900. Architects were Brown, Burton and Davis. Extensive renovations began again in 2006.
