Scope and Content

This house, located at 50 Washington Avenue, is a Contributing Structure and was built circa 1861. It is one of the few largely intact examples of Gothic Revival left in the villlage. The house may have been built by Michael Dooley who is said to have built many of the homes in the Washington and Church Street areas. The house is shown on the 1969 Titus Map and is indicated on the Walsh and Dooley Subdivision Map dated May, 1864. This area was known as Irish Town and was settled by both African- American and Irish during the 1860s. According to the Ohio Historical Inventory the lot was owned as part of a parcel of land by Sarah Graveson by 1883 but the deed search does not reflect that. The house was owned by the Village of Glendale from 1935 to 1984. During that time the Glendale Village Directory shows the house occupied by F.L. Kelly at least in 1949. Style is typical of the "Downing Cottage" popularized by Andrew Jackson Downing in the mid 19th century.
