Scope and Content

This building, a Contributing Structure located at 5-6 Village Square, is one of the oldest buildings in the Square. The first floor, 5 Village Square, is commercial and the 2nd floor (6 Village Square) is residential. The Recorder's office lists it as 1844 however it doesn not appear on the Titus map. According to the Ohio Historic Inventory sheet, the Igler Drugstore opened at 5 Village Square. According to the Igler family, Mr. Igler added a second story with the intention of living above the store. As this did not appeal to his wife, they later built their home at 840 Woodbine Avenue. The drugstore was moved to 21 Village Square c. 1940s. Other businesses that have been located in the building are William Shepherd's notion store, Mrs. Withenbury's Village Shop also owned later by Mrs. Dorothy Stewart. In the 1950s, it was occupied by a beauty parlor owned by Mrs. Anita Westendorf. In the 2000s, it held a gift shop, a mortgage title firm, and currently (2006-), the Pink Ink Design Shop.
