This house, a Contributing Structure, was located at 1043 North Greenville. It was razed c. 2006.
Martin Gruber and his wife Elisabeth Albert raised their children in the house as did their son Martin Gruber.
According to Martha Peters, granddaughter of Martin Gruber Sr., Martin Gruber Sr., who spoke seven languages, worked for Procter & Gamble as a translator and originally lived in Cincinnati's Over the Rhine district. He was legally blind, born with congenital cataracts. He moved his family to Glendale when he learned that he could take the train to work in Ivorydale. Mr. Gruber became friends with Mr. Procter and would often sit with him during services at Christ Church.
When Mr. Gruber first moved to Glendale he bought the house next door to 1043 (1037) and raised the older of his 7 children in that house. As expenses grew, he moved next door to a house that was thought to have been built c. 1860s and is remembered as being a basement and one large room. Mr. Gruber added on to it with the help of his oldest boys. According to Ms. Peter's Aunt Frieda, who was born in 1917, there was another smaller cottage in front of the Gruber house which they rented out to a young couple. That cottage burned down. It stood about where the two linden trees still stand. Aunt Frieda remembered visiting with the woman who lived there - they enjoyed cooking together.
Ms. Peter's father, also named Martin was born in 1919 and also
raised his family at 1043 Greenville. Major Carruthers served as
a mentor to Martin and once assisted him in getting him out of a bit of trouble in Florida when he was in the service.
The house seems to have been last occupied c. 1995-1998 and underwent quite a few renovations during that time. It was razed, c. 2007, when the property was bought by the Honerlaw family who also bought the house next door where the Grubers orginally lived.Lexicon
