Dress of Sheer Striped Black Silk FabricDescription
One lady's black silk dress, novelty woven fabric with very fine stripes/black on black. Basic dress has "V" neck, with net insert.1-1/2" designed net rolled collar same as "V" insert. finely embroidered cornets, trumpets and shafts of wheat on netting. Applied at "V" neck design is a black, machine embroidered 1-1/2" triangular shaped trim - large puffed sleeve cap; below elbows is 8-1/4" length designed netting with triangular embroidered trim at edge of sleeve/wrist, underlined with fine white silk to give grayish effect; applied to this area is very fine designed netting - 3-1/2" wide minutely gathered to the sleeve just below the elbow. Cummerbund of silk taffeta - 3 rows of tight gathers center front hold the cummerbund 1" in length 1/2" in width to create an imaginary jewel at the center back, the cummerbund is 2" wide. Center back close 12 hooks/eyes. Below cummerbund-bodice/skirt one hook/eye; the skirt on center back placket has 5 hooks/eyes. Skirt is 42-1/2" long from waist - skirt gathers to a silk taffeta waistband 1" in width machine stitched. Ten machine embroidered appliques of circles and budding leaves - 4" X 4" squares at knee area, about 5" apart. Underlining of bodice - 7 stays (bones) at center front center back, two side seams, darts for front bodice from the waistline, two stays in back bodice 3" from center back on either side. Back bodice is lined in silk taffeta, front bodice is lined in plain weave lightweight white cotton. The neck insert is sheer organdy. The underskirt is gathered - heavyweight, black silk taffeta; 24" from waist there is a 16" ruffle attached to give overall length of 40". Hem is 3" wide machine stitched.General Notes

Home-made afternoon dress with lace trim on cotton batiste. The overlay peplum attaches at the waist. The dress was made about 1870 by Mrs. Oberlin.
