Big Tree Farm Sign

Description

This is part of a display for "Big Tree Farm". It is focused on the history of the tallest cottonwood tree in IL, known as the "Pottawatomi Tree". Its hollow trunk would hold 31 people. It has been the subject of considerable, though unverifible, Indian lore. It could be true, howeverthat, being such a conspicious land mark, it could easily have been a place of Indian rendezvous.

Historical Note

Note

The tree was located north of Glenview Rd and just west of the present day Edens overpass. A lightening strike resulted in the tree being cut off 30 ft. from the ground. The shield was fashioned from a portion of the tree and attached to the trunk. This was the sign for the "Big Tree Farm". The shield with its logo "Big Tree Farm" is the only known remnant of the cottonwood.
