Bernice Ai, the donor's mother, owned Golden Dragon Oriental Imports. Her first store, the Golden Dragon Gift Shop, was located at 1225 Waukegan Road from 1970-1977. In 1977, Ai designed and built the Golden Dragon Oriental Imports store located at 662 Waukegan Road. According to Ai's daughter, the store "was THE place to buy orientalia not only in Glenview but also in the entire North Shore area. Bernice Ai knew Chinese antiques and the [sic - she?] went to Asia yearly on buying trips. The store had not only arts and antiques, but also Chinese furniture, decorative items, beautiful Hong Kong designed jewelry. The store was more of a gallery vs a regular store."
Bernice Ai left Glenview in 2013 to live with her daughter, Berni Bourekas, in California. In 2018, she moved to Las Vegas with her daughter and son-in-law.Acquisition
