Lillian Stangor Rugen married Frederick August Rugen, son of C.D. Rugen and financial worker in Rugen Stores. Fred was widowed with two daughters, Jeanette Rugen Childs and Betty Schutter, at the time of their marriage. Lillian grew up in the area and though she came from a family of modest means, she worked her way through a degree at Northwestern University. Lillian and Fred Rugen were active members of the Glenview community and Methodist Church. After retirement, the couple maintained a home in Clearwater, Florida and at the Des Plaines Methodist Camp Ground. After Fred's death, Lillian moved to a retirement community in Evanston where she later passed away.

Note
No deed of gift was found with the donor questionnaire as of 3/23/2026. The donation was attributed to Margaret Schutter Kiekhafer. However, her answers to the questionnaire indicate that these papers were among her mother's possessions that she was left in custody of as executor of her mother's estate and that she chose to donate her mother's papers to GHC as none of her mother's heirs wanted them. This indicates that the donation should be attributed to the Estate of Betty Rugen Schutter with Executor Margaret Schutter Kiekhaefer as the agent authorized to sign for the donation.
