Morris Chair

Name/Title

Morris Chair

Description

Homemade Morris chair with adjustable back bar. The chair has metal casters, a removable seat and back cushion upholstered in a black and tan floral fabric.

Context

Handmade by Arthur Maynard, who was a well-known local craftsman and architect. Maynard was born in Chicago and was a resident of the Park at 28 Park Drive, Glenview, for many years. He was educated in Chicago at Immanuel Church School and Crane Technical High School. Maynard was first employed by Daniel H. Burnham's architectural firm and later by Graham, Anderson, Probst, and White after Burnham's death. Maynard served as a structural engineer on projects including Washington, DC's Union Station, Chicago Union Station, and the Chicago Post Office. According to a November 25, 1972 letter from Gladys Blackman (see donor file for letter) "the 'Morris' chair must have been made in the early 1900's because I can't remember when it was not in the house (The Maynards were my father's cousins.)"
