Photo negative strip for 2026.2.1 black and white aerial photo of the Pickwick Golf Course, taken circa 1940, prior to the condemnation of the golf course land for Naval Air Station Glenview expansion.
Context
The Pickwick Golf Course was a 36 hole golf course that opened after World War I and closed early in World War II. The golf course land was condemned circa 1942 for the expansion of Naval Air Station Glenview. In 1958, Navy personnel at NAS Glenview decided to start a golf club on the 18 holes that remained from the pre-war Pickwick Golf Course. They honored the course's history by choosing the name Pickwick Golf Club for their group. The club played on this 18 hole course until the closure of NAS Glenview in 1995. The Pickwick Golf Club continued to exist beyond the naval air station's closure and since 2000 have been based at Veterans Memorial Golf Course at Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago, IL.
