Scope and Content

The item contains correspondence between Martha Peterson and Lynna Kay Shuffield regarding the William Edward Calhoun and Adelia Dunovant plot, specifically regarding obtaining photographs from the University of Texas of the William Edward Calhoun monument to restore it. The correspondence includes information about the Dunovant family and the broken marker of Henry Philip Roberts. Lastly, a document entitled "Monument Restoration File Damage to Calhoun Cross on Dunovant Lot (E-147) includes the memo "On Friday, November 18, 2005, while giving Joanne Seale Wilson a driving tour of the cemeteries, I first noticed the cross had fallen from the Calhoun monument and broken into several pieces. On December 2, 2005, Bernice forwarded me a message from Lynna Kay Shuffield complaining that she had reported the damage to the Glenwood office and had not had a response. Mary Ann had not told me I was to call Lynna Kay. I wrote her immediately and apologized, reminded her that there are many projects awaiting funds and manpower, but promising to do all we could. I began searching online for supplies to repair the cross. Finding little, I finally ordered something in early December that proved not satisfactory for our purpose. When Lynna Kay continued to complain into late January, 2006, I spoke to Dick and he agreed to let Freeman make the repairs. I explained to Freeman that I had the small pieces of marble in my office, but he forgot that and made the repairs without them at some time after January 31, 2006, when Lynna Kay complained that it was still broken, and April 12, 2006, when the repaired cross appears in the background of a photograph of the Longcope Lot. I have not yet seen Freeman's invoice that the work. MP"
