Context

This is the “Goulbourne Township” Rural School Fairs shield. This award was presented to school section number 4 (SS No.4) on Franktown Road at Dwyer Hill for three consecutive victories at the Goulbourne Township Rural School Fair in 1923, 1924 and 1925. The first rural school fair was held in 1909 and was adopted by schools across Ontario, by 1917 there were 302 school fairs with 2,825 schools and 68,862 students participating. The Rural School Fair began as a competition of school gardens and grew to include handcrafts, livestock competitions, driving competitions, public speaking and school parades. To support student participation the Board of Agriculture donated silver cups and shields, Women's Institutes provided refreshments and judged student handcrafts, Township Councils provided grants, and Rural School Fair Associations awarded prizes.
