The doll is dressed in an off white coloured eyelet dress with full length sleeves and skirt, the dress has a tie around the bodice. The doll has several undergarments under the dress including white knitted stockings, white fabric petticoat, and white fabric bloomers. Two leather shoes are placed on the feet.

Context

This story starts with the doll’s maker’s mark, “Made in Germany Armand Marseille 390.” Armand Marseille was one of the largest and best known bisque doll head manufacturers. From 1900 to 1930 it is estimated that Marseille produced 1,000 bisque doll heads a day. His company produced baby, child, women and character heads and purchased doll bodies from other manufacturers. This example from the Museum’s collection has a Marseille head that was paired with a jointed composition body. The doll was awarded in 1919 to it’s six year old owner, who was the winner of a race during a picnic event at Beech Bush .
