Description

(a) Dark metal sheath with rounded, circular point and additional rounded attachments on the underside to fit the bayonet. (b) The blade is long and narrow with a wood-inset handle. There are small attachments on the underside of the guard with circular slots.

Context

Knife bayonets like these were widely used during the Great War. Used as both a melee weapon and all purpose tool, these short blades were attached to the underside of the rifle - effectively turning the rifle into a spear. These attachments were standard issue and became a staple of a soldiers kit. This bayonet is made for the Carcano rifle, designed in 1889, and used until the end of the Second World War. There is a manufacturer's mark on the ricasso below the crosspiece that says TERNI the location in Italy where it was made.
