Description

This object is a straw hat with a rounded brim on the front. The exterior is a tan colored straw. The interior of the cap, and the underside of the brim are painted blue. The blue paint on the underside of the brim begins to fade in a gradient with the most faded sections occurring towards the front of the brim. There is a black piece of fabric which runs around the back half of the bottom rim of the cap.

Context

This artefact was donated to the Museum in 1993 by the family of Mr. Jim Green, who used this hat c. 1870-1900 while working as a farmer. The hat originally was made of a vibrant blue dyed straw, however the sun has completely bleached away all of the blue from the outside of the hat. This style of hat is quite unique, a blend of the straw boater hat that was popular with Victorian era gentlemen and the cloth cap that was worn by the members of American baseball leagues c. 1900.
