Description

One package of High-Test CopperFone shoe plates

Context

This is a “Hi-Test Coppertone” shoe plate. These plates would have been attached to the sole of shoes, either at the heel or the toe, sometimes both. Nails would go through the holes and into the sole of the shoe to secure them. Look at the price written of this set of heel plates - only 13 cents. Shoe plates were important purchases for people who wore leather soled shoes, as they helped increase the life of their leather soles. Plates were used to protect the heels and toes on a shoe from wearing out and scuffing over time. Without shoe plates people who walked often, worked in harsh conditions or travelled in rough terrain would wear their leather sole down quickly. The worn shoes would then need to have their sole replaced by a cobbler. Shoe plates were a worthwhile investment.
