Description

Woman's crochet hat with fabric lining and lace trim; a satin ribbon is woven around the brim, which also contains two ribbon bows.

Context

This is a silk nightcap. This artefact from the Museum’s collection would have been made between 1900 and 1910 and has a light green silk interior, cream coloured crochet lace, and a cream coloured satin ribbon decoration. Nightcaps like this one would have been used to protect the popular curled hairstyles of the early 1900s as the wearer slept. Silk caps, scarves, bonnets, and pillowcases continue to be used to protect the health of curly hair.
