Description

One silver colored metal box with a wire handle and retractable lid with holes on one end. Impressed on the lid is the word "Thrift" in the center of the lid.

Context

This is a popcorn popper, which is made of a rectangular metal box and a wire handle. Kernels and cooking oil would go into the box section, and then someone would hold the box over an open fire to heat the kernels. This way of making popcorn was popular during the mid 1800s, and open fires were a common heat source for popping the kernels. Over time this style of popcorn maker was replaced with air poppers, microwaveable popcorn, stovetop, and prepared bagged popcorn.
