France. Sept. 30/17. Dear Mother; Read your letter of Aug 17th. being glad to hear of you all being well, got a lot of mail which had been waiting for me in the Bath’s hands a card + letter from Cissie + also a letter from Earl Dobson being very much surprised, was just going to write him a few days as Cissie had sent me his address. Am now [crossed out: two] over two weeks back from leave + have once more got down to soldiering as it is pretty hard after living a short while a civilized life. The Rich. + Ottawa fairs are over again for this year eh! wonder how (2) George got along with the horses, you told me in your last letter of sending down the entries, hope he did as good as last year, after the fairs he will want to get down to school again I regretted very much to hear of Ilara Meridith being killed she was such a very smart + nice girl, am sure it must have been a awful shock to her people + surrounding country. Sam MacFee’s brother is back from Blighty was over a year there, didn’t get along time of it, was one of the first of he 73rd. to get wounded, was only a bullet through the calf of the leg but some how or other it took a long time (3) to heal up, there was alot of the other lads came back in the same draft, they all had been with Ernie in Eng. must write him again my letters never seem to reach some were returned that I wrote about three months ago. Earl doesint [spelling error: doesn’t] think he ever be fit for active service again. They are not sending them over to France under nineteen now, so Ernie will be Jake for quite a while yet, + am glad to see him over there of course I would like his company, but he has done his bit anyway, the lads say he was angry for not getting away, but I know (4) that’s the kind of a lad he is wants to be with the lads. + thinks he is not doing his bit. Macfee noticed a awful change in me thinks [crossed out: half] as I have got a lot stouter but can hardly see where I picked it up, but I guess there is a little difference. Did you the pictures I sent? Forgot to tell of receiving the [crossed out: 8] 5 in your letter it was registered, + also a box I got a few days ago, containing the white sox + under wear they are certainly very nice if they would only stay that clean. Must close for now with love to all. Sefton; “Excuse writing”
