France, October 30th, 1917 Dear Clissie:- Suppose you have been expecting a letter for some time, received your welcomed letter of September 26th, being glad to learn of you getting the Lockett [spelling error: locket] of picturs [spelling error: pictures] OK. you know I got Paris engraved on the back thinking it would be nice. Mother got the pictures too. you people think I have gotten stouter, well I really think I have myself, + the lads that came back from Blighty say the same, but its hard for me to see where I picked it up, well I guess that’s enough talk on live stock, eh!! We have been out of the line a few days expect to move any time, which is mostly undecided until the last minute, the weather is (2) becoming cold + miserable once more, by all accounts you people had a very dry summer. I had word from Erv. [abbreviated: Ervie] Brown + Earl Dobson in Eng. [abbreviation: England] they are both doing fine, Earl was still in hospital in London but was expecting to go to convalescent camp any time, Ervie is in with the rest of the lads who are under age, + doesn’t seem to like it, but he doesn’t know when he is lucky, he is no boy to look at I am sure the lads that saw him over there tell me he is getting very stout + big. he is always giving me the [indecipherable] for not writing well I have answered all his letters + he hasn’t got one yet, some were sent backstamp location unknown but will try once more. (3) George did good with the horses eh! was glad to hear how he got along, am sure he + Frank had some time at it. Herb seems to be giving you the full benefit of the car, in every letter you write you mention of either going up home in the car yesterday or will be tomorrow, it’s a wonder they didn’t get up home eh! everybody have them now Well the conscription must be getting some of the lads wind up, can imagine how dad will be speaking of the poor Eadie lads. Told you on my other letter of not getting the five dollars in that letters think you forgot to put it in but perhaps not. Excuse me writing “have runout of ink” Best Love Sefton.
