In France,
Oct 29/16 [abbreviated: October 29, 1916]
Dear Father:
How is everybody? rec'd [abbreviated: received] mother's + Clystal's letters a few days ago being very glad to hear from you all.
I suppose everything by this time is frozen up around Rich, [abbreviated: Richmond] how did you get along with the ploughing? The weather now is very wet and miserable throughout this district, old Rich. [abbreviated: Richmond] has nothing on this for mud. George did fine with the horses eh! did you show them at the Carp? Forgot to tell of receiving Evyleen's beautiful box of eatables which is always appreciated

here, as it is very backward for getting such things. The rest of the Rich. [abbreviated: Richmond] lads are all fine, I think we have seen almost everybody from around home,
I have received quite a few letters durings the last two weeks and have not a chance of answering them, but you will have to allow for the circumstances. You should see some of the guns along this front, if in any close distance of them the shock will almost knock you down. They keep Fritz pretty well down but it is certainly taking some material.
We are now in a district where the Germans have been

driven back about eight miles, in this stretch of land there is nothing but shell holes, I don't think there is a square foot of land but is turned over, things of all description being buried in the ground ten feet down, the villages and small towns are all blown down, the only resemblance of a city is the cobble stones.
The Germans sure had some fine dug-outs they being from 20-30 feet deep, they musn't of [spelling error: have] ever intended to retreat. The people in Canada have no idea of this war, really there seems to be no limit to it.

Well you will have to excuse the short letters, as it is very hard to get a [spelling error: an] opportunity of writing at all. Got a letter from Grandpa containing [$100.8] was wondering what interest I could make on it, but it sure is nice to have money over here.
With Love To All
