[Envelope Front] [Canada Post 2-cent stamp with 1Tc] [Post mark] CALGARY [date illegible] Mrs. James Stewart Richmond Ontario [Envelope Back] [Post mark] RICHMOND SP 9 18. [abbreviated: September 9, 1918] ONT. [abbreviated: ONTARIO] [letter] 321 -- 11th Ave East. Calgary Sept 4th [abbreviated: September 4] Mr. + Mrs. Stewart + family. Dear Friends, I have been wanting to write a few lines to you, ever since I heard about poor Sefton, but it seems so hard to express your feelings on paper. We feel deeply for you in your great sorrow, it is so hard to part with those we love. But it is a great consolation to look forward to meeting (2) them again, where there will be no parting. So many poor fellows [have] gone, over the top, for, the last time, since this [last] big drive started, and a great many more will still go. It is wonderful, where we read how cheerfully they face it. We can only hope, and [pray] that the time may be very near at hand, [when] this war shall be over (3) I hope you are all well. We spent a month in Kamloops during the holidays and Jean has been so well since the day we went there. Both girls started to school yesterday again. Velma is in Grade X [Roman numeral for 10] and Jean in Grade VI [Roman numeral for 6]. Velma received Evelyn's letter today and will write soon. I will close for this time, I wish I was near enough to talk with you, instead of writing. Good--Bye, Your Friend, J. E. Shaver.
