Y.M.C.A. AND CANADIAN WAR CONTINGENT ASSOCIATION WITH THE CANADIAN FORCES France, Aug. [abbreviated: August] 28th. 1917 Dear Mother: Rec’d [abbreviated: received] your parcel of July 4th. Containing the underwear, razor blades, + eatables.(thanks very much) the underwear is sure nice for a change if it would only stay clean. I think I answered your last letter which was written about July 5th, wrote to Clystal the other day, forget whether it was your last letter or second last that the five dollars was, but am pretty sure I acknowledge [spelling error: acknowledged] it. Had word from Austin Dilworth, Earl Nixon + from G. Mills. (2) Earl told me of poor Eddy Bird being dead, hadn’t heard before, that is pretty hard luck, he was always such a jolly fellow, think he was in the 12th Brigade Trench mortar, hadn’t seen him for a long time One of the lads from Carp was sent a Review which gave an account of his death. There has been quite a few lads from Carp wounded + killed lately, there is a couple that should soon arrive home Johnston + Millar. I had a letter from Ervie the other day + he was O.K. but has never got any of my letters. what ever is the reason, is always (3) giving me the mischief for not writing, am not getting any word from Earl don’t know why but people say he is not getting his mail from home, that is very sad about Carrie’s husband. Everybody is getting a car around Rich, [abbreviated: Richmond] G Mills was telling me of W. Bigford I think it is having one + also I bellie [spelling error: believe] Graham, all our cousin’s [spelling error: cousins] [crossed out: are] will soon be supplied with one, “Herb Eadie” I suppose will have one soon, its [spelling error: it’s] a wonder (4) you people don’t get one I will soon have enough money sent home to buy a little “run-about” ha ha! I guess it was save Nellie + Dimple together with that wonderful rubber tire buggy, with the “invisible gear”. I do hope Georg [abbreviated: George] gets his entrance this year, Evyleen is doing fine eh! Am sure Norma + Ivy have grown quite a bit since I left. Grandpa has gone back up north thought he was going to live down in Rich. [abbreviated: Richmond] think it would much nicer for both him + yourself. (5) The weather has been very warm the last while also some very heavy showers was up the line the other day for a short time, we expict [spelling error: expect] to go in anytime now. I heard Eric + N. Brown were in a draft for the P.P.C.L.I. [abbreviated: Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry] Cholin Sinclair [spelling error: Colin Sinclair] is with them, think he has commission now. Alywin is also over in Eng. [abbreviated: England] his dad will able to see him. Should write oftener but it is so hard to get down to it over here. With Love To All. Sefton.
