This object is an indenture documenting the bargain and sale of a plot of land between Thomas Lyon and Henrietta Simpson. It is dated July 1,1884. The parcel of land in question is the F1/2 W1/2 Lot 5 Concession 8. The support is a rectangular cream coloured piece of paper. The mediums are a black ink for the text and a red ink for layout/decorative purposes. The fields have been filled in with a handwritten black ink, rendered in cursive. The title page is located on the front proper top right quadrant. The title page appears perpendicular to the primary text as this object was intended to be folded into a brochure form for transport and storage. There is a rubber stamp imprint in blue ink located at the proper right of the title page, it exhibits 7 lines of script. The fields are filled in with a handwritten black ink. The words "This Indenture" appear at the top center of the proper left half of the front, rendered in a larger decorative font. There is a block of text in the proper bottom right corner of the front which is upside-down in relation to the primary body of text. There are three circular red seals located near the proper right margin at the bottom of the back proper left page. They are arranged in a vertical alignment and resemble cogs with pointed teeth.
On the front proper left half there are three vertical lines which are comprised of thin parallel red lines; these extend the length of the page. The proper right most vertical red line, near the center of the page, is comprised of three smaller lines, the other two vertical red lines are comprised of two thinner lines. There are also 2 horizontal red lines which are made of smaller red lines that run the length of the proper right half of the front. The topmost line is comprised of 3 smaller lines and located near the top; the other is comprised of 2 smaller red lines and located near the bottom.
There are four vertical red lines on the back of the page. They are located on the sides of each half, two on each. These lines are themselves comprised of two smaller red lines.Context
This object provides information about an individual and land linked to a historical family from the Goulbourn area. It is associated with the Switzer family, through marriage via Henrietta Thompson nee Switzer. The Switzers were some of the original inhabitants of the Goulbourn area through John Charles Schweitzel, an immigrant from Spain (the family was renamed Switzer at an unknown date).Lexicon
