Letter: Sefton Stewart to Mother, February 18, 1918Entry/Object ID
2014.7.33.5a,bDescription
This object is an envelope and the letter which was contained within.
The envelope, 2014.7.33.5a, is made of a tan piece of paper which has been folded into shape. It is held together with an unknown adhesive. On the front of the envelope are three inscriptions, written in handwritten cursive, rendered in a black medium. At the center it reads "Mrs. Jas. Stewart, Richmond, ONT, Canada". At the proper bottom right it reads "Via Ottawa". At the top center the inscription is illegible but contains approximately three letters. There are two rubber stamp imprints rendered in black ink on the front. At the proper bottom right corner is a rectangle with a crown at the top, with text that reads "PASSED BY CENSOR NO. 5034"; this stamp is oriented upside in relation to the envelope. At the top center the stamp bears the text "ARMY POST OFFICE B" which is flanked on both sides by horizonal waved lines. On the back of the envelope is a single rubber stamp which presents as a circle with text inside. This tamp is significantly faded and only the letters "ONT" are visible at the bottom.
2014.7.33.5b, the letter, is comprised of a single piece of tan colored paper which has been folded along a vertical axis to create an approximation of a booklet. As a result of this folding both the first and last page appear on the front, while the second and third page are represented on the back. Both the front and the back are covered in script. The medium is a black ink, rendered in cursive. The first page appears at the proper left half of the front and begins with "France, Feb, 18/2/18". The proper right half of the front ends the letter, with the phrase "Love to all". The second page appears at the proper right half of the back and features a "(2)" at the top. The third page appears at the proper left half of the back and features a "(3)" at the top.Subject Person/Organization

2014.7.33.5b France, Feb. 18/2/18. Dear Mother, Rec'd your letter of Jan. 18. + Norma's of Jan. 13th, being very glad to hear that you were all well, also got the boots they are certainly a fine pair of boots, that is a serviceable boot for the trenches. ""Thanks very much"", wasn't very particular whether you would send a pair or not this winter as the weather has been much milder than last year that is so far, therefore the trenches haven't been [crossed out ""in a""] so bad a condition. Norma writes splendidly now I think she has grown a great deal since I left, her letter came with Mr. Taggart's. You were asking several things in your letters if I had ever got a parcel + letter from Annie Wells, well I did + have acknowledged them some time ago. In reference to George going in to the Bank I am not quite in favour of it, would much sooner see him continue on in school, think it would be much better for him to go to collegiate in Ottawa, know its very hard to stick on [with] the studying, but in the end think he would be thanking himself, no matter what line of work he should happen to take up. I know its hard + very monotonous for George because as I did myself he takes in every little dogfight as Pa calls them. Do you know who I saw yesterday! but Deanie Rielly am now billeted quite close to him. is looking good, is in the Div. Signallers transport, has a team of horses to look after which is right in his line. Their job has ours beaten fifty ways, only goes up a limited distance towards the [crossed out transp] front line with rations. They don't be always moving around as we do (infantry) I got this Canadian mail while in the trenches, we are only two days out now. Was near forgetting to tell of getting this fine [spat] which is really the most important thing, got it changed shortly after we got out + was then able to visit the canteen purchasing a few delicacies. Told you in my other letters of seeing Channon Hall is with Paul Fox in the 2nd. Batt., suppose Eric Neelin is still in Blighty. Willie Mills is liable to do some time over there too, had a letter from Clystal a few days ago. Will be around quite a bit with Deanie while we are here, its great relate old times not seeing any one from home for so long, of course I never feel lonesome have plenty of chums. Am writing this on my knee, excuse + mistakes Love To All, Sefton,Language
