Letter: Uncle J [Green] to Margaret Stewart, August 22, 1918Entry/Object ID
2014.7.33.13a,bDescription
This object is an envelope and a letter of the condolence which was contained within. The signature of the letter's writer is illegible but appears to be a variation of A.J.G. with the last name possible being 'Green'. The letter is addressed to Mrs. James Stewart and is dated August 22, 1918. The letter writer offers their sympathies to the Stewart family, following the death of Sefton Stewart in combat on August 8, 1918.
The envelope, 2014.7.33.13a, is made of a cream colored paper that has been folded into shape. It is held together within an unknown adhesive. An inscription on the front in a dark black ink, handwritten in cursive, reads "Mrs. James Stewart- Richmond, West- Ont- Can". There is a rectangular postage stamp on the proper top left corner of the front featuring a male face facing to the proper right flanked by a laurel wreathe, and the words "U.S. POSTAGE" and "3CENTS3" appearing above and below the face respectively. There are two rubber stamp imprints on the front rendered in black ink located in the proper top left quadrant. The first, closer to center, presents as a circle with text inside which reads "WEST PORT AUG 22 1 PM 1918". The second stamp partly overlies the postage stamp; it is an oval comprised of horizontal bands of black ink with negative space between. On the back there is a printed inscription in a faint blue ink at the top center of the top fold which reads "The Westport Inn WESTPORT-ON-LAKE CHAMPLAIN N.Y." There is a single rubber stamp imprint on the back located at the top center which a slight bias towards the proper right side; it partly overlies the printed inscription. The stamp is rendered in black ink which presents as a circle with text within. The text inside the stamp on the back is mostly faded, particularly at the top, but the phrase "18 ONT" is visible at the bottom.
2014.7.33.13b is a letter which spans the entire front and the proper right half of the back of a single piece of paper. The support is a cream colored paper. The medium is a very dark black handwritten ink, rendered in a unique cursive style which is very difficult to read; the ink is visible from the other side of the paper. There is a printed letterhead on the front of the letter located at the top of the proper right half of the page, rendered in blue ink. The letterhead reads "The Westport Inn WESTPORT-ON-LAKE CHAMPLAIN N.Y.". The letterhead and printed inscription on the back of the envelope are identical. The letter begins with the phrase "In a letter just received from..."Subject Person/Organization
