Description

This object is a governmental letter of condolence and its accompanying envelope. 2014.7.33.6a, the envelope, is made of a tan piece of paper that has been folded into shape. It is held together with an unknown adhesive. There are two inscriptions on the front rendered in a handwritten black medium. The first appears at the center and reads "Mr. James Stewart Richmond Ont." in cursive. The second inscription is at the bottom proper right corner of the front and is illegible; this inscription has been affected by the tear on the proper right edge. There are two stamps rendered in black ink on the front. The first at the top center is a circle with text within that reads "OTTAWA AUG 20 5-PM 1918". The second stamp is located at the proper top left corner and reads "FREE". On the back of the envelope at the center there is an old form of the Canadian Coat of Arms rendered in red. The coat of arms is surrounded by the text "PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE CANADA". There is a rubber stamp imprint rendered in black ink on the proper right of the back which presents as a circle with text within it; this stamp is significantly faded and only the letters "CHMOND" are fully legible. 2014.7.33.6b, the letter of condolence, is rendered on a stiff piece of cream/tan colored paper. The medium is a printed black ink. On the front there are 5 lines of script rendered in cursive. This reads "The Prime Minister and Members of the Government of Canada send their deepest sympathy in the bereavement which you have sustained." The back is blank.
