This object is a letter of condolence and the envelope in which it was sent. The letter is written on two pieces of paper, using only one face of each. The letter is from Katie B. Woods and is addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Sefton Stewart & Family"; it is dated August 22, 1918. The letter offers condolences regarding the death of Sefton Stewart as well as words of encouragement. 2014.7.33.11a the envelope is made of a tan colored paper which has been folded into shape. It is held together with an unknown adhesive. An inscription on the front handwritten in black ink rendered in cursive reads "Mrs. James Stewart, Richmond, Ontario". There is a brown rectangular two-cent postage stamp on the proper top left corner of the front bearing a male face facing towards the proper right. There are two faint rubber stamp imprints rendered in black ink which are illegible due to their state. The first is located to the proper left of center at the top; it is circular in shape and may contain some writing in the center. The second stamp imprint overlies the postage stamp on the proper top left corner of the front; it is circular in shape and is comprised of parallel black lines with negative space between them. There is one rubber stamp imprint on the back on the proper right side midway up the envelope; this presents as a circle with writing on the interior which reads in part "AU23, 18, ONT" however the word at the top is significantly faded. 2014.7.33.11b is the first page of the letter. The support is a cream colored piece of paper. The medium is a handwritten black ink rendered in cursive. The script fills the front of the page while the back is blank. This page begins at the top "Hurdman's Bridge, Aug 22/18" 2014.7.33.11c is the second and concluding page of the letter. The support and medium are identical to the first page. The script fills the front of the page while the back is blank. The letter concludes "Your Sincere Friend, Katie B. Woods"

[Front of Envelope] [Post mark illegible] [Canada 2 cent Postage Stamp] Mrs. James Stewart, Richmond, Ontario. [Back of Envelope] [Post mark] [RICHMOND] ONT. [abbreviated: ONTARIO] AU 23 18 [abbreviated: August 23, 1918] [Page 1 of 2] Hurdman's Bridge, Aug 22/18 [abbreviated: August 22, 1918] Dear Mr, Mrs. Stewart & family, - I was terribly shocked last night when I read in the Casualty List the name of Sefton. My thoughts went out to you all in loving sympathy and prayer. How lowly you must feel. I know you are thinking, ""If one could only have looked into the face of our big, manly boy, just once, before he was called; but you had looked into those dear eyes for a long while, and God had need of Him for higher duties. He showed his worth by enlisting when so very young, to fight for his country in a righteous cause. He [Page 2 of 2] willingly gave his life for such. What more noble death to die! I know it is hard to see the justness of all this yet, but God is a loving and righteous God and knows best. You are to follow in the path of duty as the one, who laid down his life did and so be prepared to meet that bright young life in the Heavenly Home. I called Herb this morning to ask for you all, and he told me he had taken [your] Clystal up Tuesday eve. It is so nice for you all to be together, for the sympathy of ones own is so precious. I wish I was near enough to go in and have a little chat. A letter seems so cold. Your Sincere Friend, Katie B. Woods"
