Description

This object is a letter and the envelope in which it was contained. The letter spans three pieces of paper, two of which feature writing on the front and back. The letter was written by Private Sefton Stewart and is addressed to his mother; it is dated March 4, 1917. 2014.7.33.12a the envelope is made of a tan paper which has been folded into shape. It is held together with an unknown adhesive. There is a brown rectangular postage stamp on the proper top left corner featuring a male face facing to the proper right. There are four inscriptions on the front of the envelope. The first at center is executed in a handwritten black ink rendered in cursive and reads "Mrs. Jas. Stewart, Richmond, Ont. Canada". The second inscription in the same medium at top center reads "on active service"; 'active' is underlined with a wiggly line. The third inscription at the proper bottom right corner in the same medium reads "Via Ottawa". The final inscription is perpendicular to the envelope at the proper right edge of the front; this is executed in a handwritten pencil rendered in cursive and is completely illegible. The illegible inscription is underlined in the same medium. There are three, possibly four, rubber stamp imprints rendered in a black ink on the front. At the proper bottom right is an oval with text which reads "PASSED FIELD CENSOR 559" with a crown at center. The second stamp is located at the top center with a slight proper-right bias; this presents as a circle with text inside which reads "OTTAWA APR 26 2PM 1917 CANADA". The third stamp is located on the proper top left corner and overlies the postage stamp; this presents as a box with the words "HELP TO WIN THE WAR BUY WAR SAVINGS CERTIFICATES" with another box to the proper left featuring lines. There is a possible fourth stamp located on the proper top left corner, however it is badly applied and it is difficult to tell whether this was intentionally application. The back of the envelope features a single rubber stamp imprint rendered in black ink to the slight proper left o f center; this presents as a circle with text inside which reads "RICHMOND AP25 ONT". The stamp on the back is upside-down in relation to the envelope. 2014.7.33.12b-d is the letter which spans three pages. The support is a tan/cream colored paper which features blue lines on one side. The medium is the same across all the pages and is a handwritten black ink rendered in cursive. 2014.7.33.12b contains pages one and two. The front and back are covered in script. The front is lined and begins "France Mar.4/17". The back is unlined and features a "(2)" at the top. 2014.7.33.12c contains pages three and four. The front and back are covered in script. The front is lined and features a "(3)" at the top center. The back is unlined and features a "(4)" at the top center, although it appears the left bracket is missing or incomplete. 2014.7.33.12d contains the conclusion. Only the front contains text. This page is lined and features a "(5)" at the top center. The letter concludes "Will write soon again. Love to all Sefton."

[Envelope Front] On Active Service [Post mark] OTTAWA APR [abbreviated: April] 26 2PM 1917 CANADA [Post mark in a box] HELP TO WIN THE WAR BUY WAR SAVINGS CERTIFICATES [Canadian 2-cent stamp] Mrs. Jas. Stewart, Richmond. Ont. Canada. Via Ottawa"" [K C Reynolds] PASSED FIELD CENSOR 559 [Envelope Back] [Post mark] RICHMOND AP [abbreviated: April] 25 17 [abbreviated: 1917] ONT. [abbreviated: Ontario] [Page 1 of 5] France. Mar 4th/17. [abbreviated: March 4 , 1917.] Dear Mother. Rec'd [abbreviated: Received] your letter of Feb. [abbreviated: February] 8th. being glad to hear from you all, thought you would have acknowledged poor Sid's death, but I suppose there is so much news to be carried across that it takes some time for a cablegram to go through, of course it might have gone to his mother first. We just came out of the trenches yesterday, & [abbreviated: and] are out for divisional rest, will be moving back of the firing line quite a ways, at present we are not far from it, [am] the big (2) are banging all around us. I expect you have already heard of the raid the 73rd. made on Feb. [abbreviated: February] 4th, well we made another one, which was much larger than the first one, had a great casualties, the majority being wounded, I don't know just how long we are getting for rest, but I guess we will be moving to some other front. Have not been getting parcels, it is so hard to get transportation, but we get all letters, got one from Clissie last night. The roads must be pretty well broken up by this time, it is quite warm but there are frequent cold spells. (3) Today I had a very good meal which consisted of six eggs, coffee & bread & butter You have no idea how much we enjoy, anything like that, they charge about nine cents a egg, it is pretty dear but every thing is over here, as they must be in Can. [abbreviated: Canada] too, but I have a chum by the name of Brown from [Perth] who gets a couple of pounds from home every month, so he foots the bill of the eggs or anything that is eatable, I often think it would be nice to send a hardtack biscuit home they are just as hard as a board, but often are thankful to get them, am writing in a Estaminet. (4) I guess the 207th are still in Amherst yet, they will have a good there, I think when they do reach England they will hardly stop long before going to France. Have not had word from Carl for sometime for what reason I don't know, hope he is getting along splendid, but not seen Lionel yet. Deanie Reilly has enlisted in the Artillery, well it is ahead of the infantry anyway, have not seen Alywin since we left the Somme, I wonder how the Doctor likes the life, how is Lorne doing he must have a nice home there now, heard Charlie was working down by Bells' Corners. (5) I am glad to hear of George sticking to school so well, he wants to stay right with it, he must have grown quite a bit since I left because he was just starting then. In in our company now we have only one officer, we lost a fine man Capt. [abbreviated: Captain] Simpson he wounded in three or four places, there is now great talk of peace I think it will come soon, do. you think the U.S. will go into it, they have been tempted enough anyway. Has there been many funerals lately? the roads will be bad for them now, I suppose [word crossed out: you] Pa will be getting a car in Spring, either he or Grandpa Will write soon again. Love to All Sefton.
