Description

This object is an envelope and the letter which was contained within it. The letter spans the front of three pages of lined paper. The letter is from Private Sefton Stewart and is addressed to his brother George Stewart. It is dated June 18 with no year given however it can be inferred that this letter was written in 1916 as this was the year Stewart deployed from Canada. 2014.7.33.14a, the envelope, is made of a tan/cream coloured paper which has been folded into shape. It is held together with an unknown adhesive. There is a handwritten inscription in pencil on the front rendered in cursive which reads "Mr. George Stewart, Richmond, Ont." The fragmentary remains of a postage stamp is visible in the proper top left corner of the front; this presents as a small piece of red paper with ragged edges in which the words "two cents" are visible. There are two partial rubber stamp imprints rendered in black ink in the proper top left corner. These overlay the postage stamp and were subsequently severely damaged and lost with the removal of the stamp. The identifiable partial remains of one indicate a partial circle with the letters "STA" visible. The back of the envelope is blank. 2014.7.33.14b-d are executed on an identical cream colored lined paper; the horizontal lines are blue in color and quite faint. The medium is a consistent handwritten pencil, rendered in cursive. The pages are unbound. 2014.7.33.14b contains the first page. The blank space above the lines contains the phrase "Moncton, Mew Brunswick June 18th". 2014.7.33.14c is the second page. The blank space above the lines is empty aside from a "(2)" at the top center. 2014.7.33.14d is the third concluding page. The blank space above the lines is empty aside from a "(3)" at the top center. The letter concludes "Will write at Halifax. Best Love Sefton."
