[Page 1 of 3] France, Mar 24/3/18, Dear Mother- Had word from you about a week ago. enclosed was a dollar, + also had a parcel of a pair of mitts, shirt, + some canned goods. thanks very much for the same, are now having splendid weather, suppose it is becoming much warmer in Canada. the snow will now be disappearing gradually, it sure is a great contrast in comparison with this time last year, just after the ninth of Apr. [abbreviated: April] we had quite a heavy snow storm, from all appearances it doesn't look like snow now. the sun seems very hot just the same as early spring in Canada. Saw Deanie Rielly the other day was OK. has a fine job there on Div. [abbreviated: Division] transport, left my long boots with him, as he has a much easier way (2) of looking after them, doesn't have to carry anything, hardly knew what to do with them, there being hardly any use of me keeping them [crossed out: me], are too warm to wear now, only wore them about three weeks altogether, then there was really no special need for them, this is such an uncertain life, I mean one day you will be in mud or rain, while the next a person may be free from all such stuff. Deanie said he had seen P. Fox + C. Hall shortly before he saw me, so they are both [illegible: jake] wonder what Channon thinks of the trenches, D. says he's looking about same. Had a card from Mrs. MacLachlan (M. Hull) she seems to like the country very much, I am sure its [spelling error: it's] fine out there in summer, suppose they will soon be getting their Easter holidays, its [spelling error: it's] the last of Mar. [abbreviated: March] is it not? that was a a pile of King's Owns you sent, would like an odd magazine now (3) + again, what's George doing now? Suppose he hasn't quite decided what to do, I really think myself, that it would be much better for himself to continue on at school, or Collegiate in Ottawa. In the case of needing mitts this year there were only a few [crossed out: nec] weeks that there was any necessity for them, of course gloves always come in handy from Fall to Spring. Earl Dobson is very likely home by now, you stated in last letter of him cabling from Liverpool, sure is lucky, suppose you have got my letter asking for money, well leave at present is [with] out, not saying for how long, but the money will be in the bank safe. Must close for now. With Love To All, Sefton.
