Context

This personalized knife was made by the Novelty Cutlery Co. located in Canton, Ohio and belonged to Mr. Robert Arling Lester Hill of Munster, Ontario. The handle of this knife was made from a clear celluloid plastic over a paper design. This process was invented in the 1870s and Novelty Cutlery Co. was one of two companies using this technique to produce both personalized and art designs on their products. The knife’s owner, Mr. Robert Hill was drafted to military service during the First World War under the Military Service Act, 1917 and served with the 2nd Depot Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment. Before his military service he was a general store keeper, working with his father Samuel Hill who owned and operated Munster’s general store during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
