Somewhere in France Dec.7/16 Dear Mother :- Have at last got a opportunity of writing you, have received a number of letters + parcels from both you + Clystal, got the underwear you sent some time ago which certainly comes in very handy. During the last few weeks we hadn't been getting any mail at all, on account of us being on the move, when they won't give mail out nor take any in. (2) I suppose you people be very anxious when not receiving mail regularly, well there is no need of worrying because you know the circumstances here for writing + no news is always good news, If anything shoulld happen any of us you would be notified shortly. You already of Earl being in the hospital in Bristol Eng. [abbreviated: England] with appendicitis, just got a card today telling where he was, he said he might have to undergo a operation but he wasn't certain, it came on him very quickly. Sid and Ervie are fine haven't seen Arthur lately, but saw some of the Batt. [abbreviated: Battalion] who said he was quite well. (3) By the time these letters reach home, the writing must be almost invisible. We are now billeted in a little village after marching about fifty miles, I guess you knew where we were down on the Somme, the Rich [abbreviated: Richmond] lads are all very lucky coming from there safely, as you will already have a idea of it from the papers, would like to tell you some of my experiences, but it is not allowed. After travelling a little farther we intend going in to hold a certain part of the line which they say is very quiet. Have sent Clystal and Evyleen souvenirs of the Somme, one being the city that now (4) lies in disctrunction [spelling error: destruction], you needn't think I am lonesome on account of being away from the other fellows, am in with a good bunch of happy lads, anyway I see Sid and Ervie quite often, may go in with them yet but haven't made up my mind. Didn't get the sweater yet but I may yet as there has been a very large mail to handle especially parcels. The people aroud here are very nice + obliging to the Canadians, the only drawback is not being able to speak French. Will write soon again. With love to all Sefton
