Context

Content warning: This object has history that relates to the residential school system, which may be distressing to some viewers. Rev. James P. Rice served as principal of Red Deer Residential / Industrial School from 1903 to 1907. During this period, residential schools operated as part of a government- and church-run system that aimed to assimilate Indigenous children and eradicate Indigenous cultures and languages. These institutions caused profound harm to children, families, and communities and are now recognized as part of the cultural genocide of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. This photograph is preserved to support truth-telling and to acknowledge the Museum’s responsibility to document both the local and national histories connected to its collections. The inclusion of this image is part of ongoing efforts to confront the legacies of colonialism and to contribute to reconciliation through transparency and education.
