The swimming certificate is a small rectangular of cardboard that has a small amount of writing. The paper is a faded yellow colour due stains or abrasion over time. From the top the certificate reads "100th Regiment No. 2 Company, Regtl No. Prv Jno Maguire 1059, GOOD SWIMMER ---- [signature] Comdg. Company." In the paper in relief is a symbol of the English crown with what appears to be an 100 underneath it with a laurel wreath below the number.
Context
Related to the 100th Regiment of Foot, later renamed the 99th Regiment of Foot. Veterans of the 100th/99th settled Goulbourn Township as part of a Crown-assisted colonization of the Township.
This land was awarded to Jonathan Maguire, a colour sergeant who had served with the 100th Regiment from a young age. Born in 1782, Maguire was among the veterans who went on to establish a new life in Goulbourn Township.
